Stryker Hip Implants Recall

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received complaints of hundreds of complications involving the Stryker hip implants. On July 6, 2012, Stryker Corporation, issued a recall of the Rejuvenate and ABG II artificial hip implant systems. Global sales and production of both hip replacement products were completely stopped.

Three months earlier, Stryker issued an “Urgent Field Safety Notice” to hip implant surgeons and hospital risk managers with information about the potential health risks associated with the implants.

Health Risks Associated with Stryker Defective Hip Implants

Some of these risks include corrosion and “fretting”. This causes ions of the metallic components to make their way into the bloodstream, tissue and bones.

The stem of the of the Rejuvenate and ABG II implants are coated with titanium. The neck has parts made of cobalt (which is very toxic) and chromium. When these rub against each other, where the neck meets the stem, metallic ions can come off and find their way into the body.

Some studies have drawn a possible connection between the absorbed metal and problems with the heart, liver, kidneys, spleen, lymph nodes and various neurological problems.

Metallosis

Metallosis is a potentially dangerous medical condition. Metal ions derived from the implants can enter the body and cause all kinds of adverse reactions. These include pain in the hip and groin area, memory loss and confusion, dizziness, heart problems, swelling and tissue death, rashes and blindness.

Stryker Hip Implant Lawsuits

Stryker is now being sued by patients suffering from serious and painful side effects, including bone loss and tissue death at the location of the implant and early device failure. These symptoms can be due to the Stryker hip implants.
